Rafael Murillo specializes in maritime law, including mutual and fixed premium marine insurance, maritime accidents, offshore industry, atypical commercial and maritime contracts, chartering contracts, various maritime financing matters, regulatory matters in the maritime and shipping industry, and civil and regulatory litigation in maritime affairs.
He has represented a variety of clients and successfully handled high-profile maritime cases related to vessel financing, protection and indemnity insurance (P&I), disputes involving freight, demurage and defense (FDD), maritime casualties, salvage and wreck removal, government liability and environmental damages. He has also advised companies participating in public tenders involving PEMEX, the Secretary of the Navy, the Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport, the Federal Electricity Commission and Port Authorities, among other government agencies. Additionally, he has served as an expert witness in Mexican law for cases in the United States, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong.
Rafael is a graduate of Universidad Iberoamericana, currently pursuing a diploma in Environmental Law at Universidad Panamericana, and holds a diploma in P&I Insurance from The North of England P&I Association at South Tyneside College, UK.
He was a founding partner of Murillo Maldonado Arredondo and FDMA and an associate at JW Pinedo & Asociados (Mexico). He has also worked as an international associate at Hill Rivkins & Hayden in Houston and New York. He has been involved in the Mexican, Central American and Caribbean Maritime Law Association, the Maritime and Transport Law Committee of the Texas-Mexico Bar Association and has delivered numerous conferences and seminars on marine insurance and commerce in Mexico and abroad (New York, Paris, London, Newcastle, and Arendal, Norway). He has experience as a lecturer in specialized courses at Tecnológico de Monterrey, the Naval University, the Center for Naval Higher Studies (CESNAV), and Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM).
